PROSTATE CANCER SURVIVAL RATE

We all know that Prostate Cancer is a critical disease. In many cases it may also turn to be fatal. Around ten percent of the patients suffering from prostate cancer are dying every year. The question however is, what the survival rate is for such prostate cancer patients?
The survival rate is based on a survey of people with prostate cancer who do not die after five years after the cancer has been detected. It may happen that a patient survives more than 5 years after the cancer is detected. This survey does not take note of such patients who are suffering from prostate cancer but die of some other reasons. Hence, the surveyors and medical scientists base their survey on such cases where prostate cancer was detected more than five years ago.
It may sound strange but analysis has disclosed that, 99% of men suffering from prostate cancer live for at least five years. Detection is also quite easy, where 91% cases are detected even before someone is truly affected with prostate cancer. In these cases, the five year survival rate is almost 100%. Even in the cases where the prostate cancer in patients has spread to various parts of the body, the survival rate is nearly 32%.
With huge advancements made in the sphere of medical science and technologies, and with early diagnosis and treatment, there has been a significant drop in the death rate in prostate cancer patients. Those who are presently undergoing prostate cancer treatment have, therefore, a better chance of surviving.
However, the chances of survival will depend on the exact status of the disease in each patient. No two cases could be completely identical since the formation of the body and its requirements are different in each case. Physicians and experts are best positioned to comment on the probability of survival of a patient with prostate cancer.
Good news is that, the survival rate for prostate cancer has been constantly on the rise for the last twenty years and more. Two rates are taken into consideration, the first being the trend over time, and the second is the survival by the age of the diagnosis. However, the trend determination may be difficult and the results obtained may not be accurate. This is because of the various circumstances that the prostate cancer patients will undergo, being under constant changes due to improvement in treatment techniques.
Statistics reveal that, the survival rate, in case of patients suffering from prostate cancer, has gone up to 75% in 2003-06 as against only 31% in 1971-75, though the rate is not uniform throughout the world. For example, the survival rate in Scotland is 60%, as against the overall rate of 71% in the United Kingdom.
The relative survival rate among people in the age group of 60-69 is higher than the survival rates in younger or older age groups. It is almost 80% as against the survival rate of only 65% in the age group of 15-49, and 50% in the age group of 80-99.
